Personal Reflections

Humbled by an All Saints’ Day Opportunity to Serve

By Sean Shallis ·

Today, on All Saints’ Day, I had the unexpected privilege of preparing and delivering a homemade meal for 26 Sisters at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary in Summit, New Jersey.

Most of all, I was humbled and reminded of the selfless work these Sisters do on a daily basis. Having the opportunity to bring a meal to their table was a meaningful honor.

The menu included homemade meat lasagna and red sauce, Caesar salad, garlic bread, antipasto, and desserts. Flowers went along, too. Preparing it all gave me a chance to offer a small, personal gesture of appreciation.

There is a family connection to this story as well: Marie Shallis, affectionately known as ‘Aunt Sister.’ That connection made the opportunity to serve the Sisters especially personal and meaningful to me.

As a Fourth Degree Knight with Council 2248, caring for others is part of what we’re called to do. It was a privilege to serve the Sisters in this small way.

I’m grateful for the reminder to pause and appreciate the people who quietly give so much of themselves every day. Thank you, Sisters, for your example of faith and service, and for the honor of preparing this meal for you.
